Kesha Nichols Talks ‘Basketball Wives’: “I’m Happy That I Don’t Fit In With This Group Of People.”
Kesha Nichols is the newest member to join the drama-filled cast of VH1′s Basketball Wives.
As a new castmate, you’re bound to be a target by the veterans of the show and Nichols is just that.
From being bi-racial to the who said what from the minute she started filming, the southern bell has had to be in defense mode.
She’s not one to fight a physical battle and she plans on ending the season the way it started, with dignity.
SheSoMajor caught up with Kesha, who gave us good talk about the current season, the altercation with Tami Roman, what’s next in her career and much more.
What were your reasons joining VH1′s Basketball Wives after seeing the previous seasons? Well, they started asking me to do Basketball Wives with the first season and that was right after my wedding was cancelled and I just was not ready to jump into reality tv but after I saw the first two seasons, I really didn’t watch season three that much, but after I saw that the girls were taking business ventures and how popular the show was and how many people it reached I thought it was a good time for me to jump on board.
Based on you watching the first two seasons who did you think you would have an instant connection with? I thought that I would get along with Royce just because we have a lot in common and then I saw good things in all the women but I don’t really like to base or judge what I see on tv. I like to meet people in person and get to know them as people rather tv characters.
You and Royce seem very genuine towards each other on camera. Are you friends off camera also? Yes! I definitely don’t see Royce as much as I would like to because we’re both really busy and she lives in Orlando and I”m between New York and North Carolina and Miami but yes, I do consider Royce a friend. I love her to death.
Lets get into the current season. Do you feel Evelyn was wrong for going back to tell Tami what you had discussed with her? I don’t really think that..[laughs]…Let me put this in the right way. I know that this is a show and everyone talks to everybody and not even on their own accord. It just so happen that Evelyn and Tami had a scene together before I had a scene with Tami. When I did see Tami it was at my fundraiser, my charity event and that wasn’t the time to discuss that. I knew that Tami and Evelyn were friends and whatever I said to Evelyn was going to get back to Tami but I didn’t say anything bad. I didn’t say anything wrong. I was asking Evelyn for advice on how to deal with someone who has a short fuse and no self control and she [Tami] just proved to me that she has a short fuse and no self control. I never said a bad word about Tami and I still haven’t.
On Monday [Mar 26] episode. Do you feel you stepped outside of your element when you met up with Evelyn, Suzie and Tami to confront Kenya Bell? Yes, I did not want to sit down with Kenya. I didn’t want to have to expose Kenya and have a pow wow that everybody wanted to have and I feel like last night was the first time that I was really sucked in and I stooped down to their level and I honestly wish I would’ve never told Evelyn that Kenya said she was loose because they just went with it. Anything you say they’re gonna get to the bottom of it and last night was the first time that I felt like you know what, I should’ve just never been involved.
We think all the viewers knew before hand that you were making a mistake in meeting up with the ladies. There were five different scenes and they kept asking me over and over again. Suzie was asking me. Evelyn was asking me. Royce was like just go do it and get it over with and so much is left out of course, which a lot of people are complaining saying things are being edited in my favor. Yes, they can leave things out but they can’t use what you don’t give them.
Speaking of editing. Do you feel you’re being portrayed accurately because some of your castmates have expressed that they thing you’re getting the better end of the stick? They are definitely editing it in the way that they want the story told. For example when they came to North Carolina to visit my family, all they did was show my white family but they didn’t show my sister, who we have the same dad and her mom is black, so I have a black sister. We sat down and discussed our dad and the fact that he wasn’t in our lives and they didn’t show any of that. So of course, it makes me look just like a white girl. They didn’t show the black side of my family. They only show what they wanna show and we have no control over that.
Has your first season on the hit reality show lived up to your expectations? Um, it was a disappointment in human nature for me. I thought at some point the girls would come together and their would be some type of sisterhood and that never happened. Not once. Everybody is out for their own and everyone is concerned about who’s the top dog and that’s just not me. The entire experience with the other girls was a disappointment except for Royce. [laughs]
Although the drama has kept the viewers, we would love to see more positive events being shown. They don’t show any of the positive stuff. Like my charity event for my friend that had brain cancer, they didn’t show any of that event. They didn’t even show her face but they made sure to show Tami saying “Are you alright? Are you okay.” They were there all day for 10 hours shooting this event and all they showed was the drama that happened in the corner.
What would you like fans to know about you? I am me. I’m very comfortable in my own skin. I’m not trying to fit in. If anything I’m happy that I don’t fit in with this group of people. I’m not trying to be somebody that I’m not. I can’t be anybody but Kesha and I’m trying to show a positive side to women of color. We’re not all like Tami. We’re not all trying to fight. We’re not all out to try to prove something to everybody and it’s unfortunate that people, like these ladies, are what our youth is looking up to right now.
What’s next for you? You have a dance company right? Yes, Sugar & Spice Productions is my dance company and I’m just working on building the company. I started a group in Miami so we’re starting to work down there as well and moving forward being an entrepreneur and trying to get these episodes under my belt and just move on because last night was a hard one to work.
Will be returning for another season? I mean, we’ll all have to wait and see. There hasn’t been an offer for a next season yet and maybe some things will be changed. Some of the girls live in LA, so maybe they’ll be switched to the LA cast. I hear rumors that it might take place in New York since nobody really lives in Miami anymore. I’m just leaving myself open to the universe and I’m just gonna try to make the right decisions, as they are placed in front of me.
What makes Kesha major? I am city smart with a country heart. I am from the South and I’m still sweet and southern but I’ve been in New York for nine years and I know what’s going on and what’s going down, down here but i’m not gonna let this place turn me into a jaded, mean New Yorker. I’m just bringing the sweetness into New York.
We hope Kesha comes out of this season unscathed!

I’m glad she stayed classy. Evelyn and Tami have a lot of growing up to do and it’s sad that they someone’s momma. There’s no question as to why the world is the way it is with moms like that.
