Major Exclusive: Kevin Cossom (Part 2)

May 05, 2011 No Comments by

In the first part of our interview with singer/songwriter Kevin Cossom, we introduced his transition from songwriter to singer, as well as his passion for music and his gratitude towards everyone who was a part of his mixtape release event at Vinnie’s. We also discussed his new project, Hook vs. Bridge 1.5, set to be released within the next month.

Get to know more about Kevin Cossom in the conclusion of our interview below.

Vanessa: What about an album? Is that in the works?

Kevin: I could put an album out now but the point is to build a buzz as much as possible. I want to make sure everything is where it needs to before we just say we’re releasing an album. You can risk a chance but we just want to be strong with how we do it.  It is in the works though. We are close to finishing that too.

Vanessa: What artist would you like to work with that you haven’t as yet?

Kevin: As far as different categories, rap features, I would like to do something with like Ye or Wayne, Nicki’s dope and I’m a fan of Big Sean. If I had to pick just of the wall stuff , I like John Mayer and I would like to collab with MGMT.[Sings a line from MGMT's song]

Vanessa: You think outside the box, you’re not just going towards one genre.

Kevin: Music is so fun and wide spread. I definitely don’t want it to be all over the place but I think you have to stick with your principles. If I was to do something with them [John Mayer or MGMT], I would still have my elements in it. I feel like if you’re an artist, nobody should be able to tell you what to paste on your canvas. Have fun with it. I’m a fan of music not just R&B music by itself or just hip hop. I’m a fan of music in general; and melody, feeling and emotion.

Vanessa: What makes Kevin Cossom major?

Kevin: I am a Grammy nominated songwriter. Everybody has their story and I have mine. I’ve been trying to do this for 11 years now. It’s like if you can’t respect somebody grinding and pretty much doing it with him and his team by themselves [Laughs] you have to be able to respect that. Musically, everything that you’ve heard me on I wrote.  We try to showcase that I’m different from what normal R&B would be. I have clever lyrics and catchy songs. I make music that feels good and relatable.
