Major Exclusive: Sean “The Pen” Garrett
What does Beyonce, Ciara, Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Beiber, Mary J. Blige and Mario all have in common? The Pen.
Dubbed “The Pen” by Jay-z, Sean Garrett has the ability to create hits. He has the Midas touch and he just might be your favorite artist’s, favorite artist. Seventeen number one singles. Come on homie, now that’s Major. Garrett has been responsible for penning hits for the recording industry’s most celebrated artists. A multi-talented artist himself, Sean Garret is a triple threat; he is a producer, singer and songwriter. We recently chatted with Garrett about his transition from super producer to artist, his latest single “Feel Love” featuring J.Cole off of his upcoming album debut and what he feels makes him Major!
Major: You’ve worked with many big names such as Beyonce, Britney Spears, Mario Nick Minaj..How are you able to produce chart topping songs but they each have a different sound to them?
Sean Garrett: I would probably say that’s the blessing. It’s just being able to a certain extent to be such overachiever, being a perfectionist. Just always trying to sort of defy the odds and do things that are totally against the grain but still give the fans exactly what it is that they want. That is great music in the club, great feeling, excitement, subject matters that I commonly talk about all the time or if I am going to say something that is tongue-in-cheek, it’s going to be a great melody and a great emotion to it.
Major: While we’re on the topic of emotions, your latest single, “Feel Love” featuring J.Cole speaks about transitioning from being a player, to being in love. They say art imitates life , is this song about someone special?
Sean Garrett: [insert cute manly laughs] Yeeeah, I would definitely have to say that it’s apart of my life and basically I’m a lover at heart. I’m someone that I feel like who has been blessed with a lot of great things. I’m big heart but sort of a body…the body of a gladiator, and you know, the smile of a child. All of those different things sort of give me a certain type of characteristic that’s a little different than most and sort of protects my heart. The sort of outdoor shell protects this tender heart that I have and the love that I have for people…I’m a really caring guy, but at the same time I like to really have fun. I’m a go-getter, hard-worker, I’m a very determined type of person and I enjoy making people smile. So art definitely imitates life and I’m a big lover. I think this is definitely a record that speaks volumes for who I am and where I’m at in my life.
Major: Can we expect more material like “Feel Love” on your upcoming album?
Sean Garrett: Absolutely, but definitely taking it to another level too. I have some really, really dope records on my album, one is this record called, “Fire” which I really love. It talks about the different parallels to my current love, losing my current love and losing my mom at the same time. So, it’s different levels of it. My next single is really something that’s big in the clubs and has a different emotion to it, it’s not necessarily “Feel Love”, but the album definitely has more of the “Feel Love” type of emotion to it.
Major: When can we expect the new album to be released?
Sean Garrett: We’re looking at late summer, I think that’s a good time for me to drop because a lot of people know my name but a lot of people still are not necessarily one hundred percent familiar with who I am and haven’t had the chance to see me perform live. I think once people come and get a chance to see me perform live their whole expectation of who I am, as a songwriter/producer changes to a really dope performer.
Major: So is it safe to say that you will be touring a lot during the summer?
Sean Garrett: Most definitely. I’m excited about being on tour. Right now I’m doing a lot of radio promotional dates. I just did SXSW, I performed on the VIBE stage which was really dope. I’m very happy and thankful for all of these different outlets giving me the opportunity and the platform to basically get out there and do my thing.
Major: We know you get tired of hearing this question but, we’ve heard some things you’ve said about Beyonce’s upcoming album. Did you pen anything for her?
Sean Garrett: Yeah. I definitely worked on the album and we had a great time working together and basically that’s all I can say. But, we definitely had a great time working together, the rest I’ll leave up to her to explain.
Major: Sounds like it will be epic…
Sean Garrett: Everything Bey does is epic
Major: What do you think makes, Sean Garrett, “The Pen” Major?
Sean Garrett: What makes me MAJOR, is the fact that I love music and I love the game enough to continue to give myself physically, emotionally, and musically. I continue to give that to the game and to the fans unselfishly, so that’s what I think makes me MAJOR.
Sean Garrett is definitely one of our favorites after this interview and one to keep an eye on. His single “Feel Love” featuring J.Cole is available on Itunes and he also has a monster single coming out in the upcoming weeks featuring Rick Ross. Come on homie, he’s Major!
