Citizen’s Review host Erin Ferguson stepped outside of the local realm recently and had the awesome opportunity to interview two of Hollywood’s leading men.
Academy award winning actor Morgan Freeman, known for his roles in performances like Glory, Invictus, The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy and Dennis Haysbert who is well known for the TV hit drama series 24, The Unit, and as the Spokesman for Allstate Insurance company, with the famous phrase “Are you in Good Hands?”, chit chatted a little with the Bahamas’ very own.
The men spoke about a number of different topics ranging from their experience in the Bahamas, to their great mentor and role model Bahamian Actor extraordinaire Sir Sidney Poitier. They both spoke of watching him as young actors, and modeling after his amazing talent on and off the screen.
Morgan Freeman reflected on Sir Sidney Poitier as his ultimate role model, saying,
“When I was a teenager and he (Sidney) hit the screen, I knew that was it for me… I read everything about him I could find, and everything he wrote… then I got a chance to meet him, and he said to me ‘You do good work’, that was a great moment for me”.
Dennis Haysbert talked about understanding that his success has been what he calls “a mixture of luck and creating your own luck”.
He expressed the desperate need for more black writers to be able to write the change that they want to see into films, this is an important way that artist can change the world. His message to young people was “you can’t go into it thinking you are going to change the world, you have to go in there as an artist and then find your way, It will come to you, It will come to you (he repeated), all you have to do is go out and get started.”
