What was meant to be fun-filled midnight screening of Batman’s The Dark Knight Rises turned into tragedy.
A masked gunman opened fire at the midnight showing of the movie in Denver, Colorado leaving 12 people dead [including a six-year-old child] and 50 injured.
The suspect, a 24-year-old James Holmes, “busted in” through a door by the front screen at Theater No. 9 at the Century 16 in Aurora, a suburb of Denver causing pandemonium.
“Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire,” Chief Dan Oates said.
The midnight showing of the movie had just started when the violence began. Donovan Tate and his girlfriend escaped from the packed theater.
“There was this one guy on all fours crawling. There was this girl spitting up blood. There were bullet holes in some people’s backs, in some people’s arms. There was one guy who was just stripped down to his boxers. It looked like he had been shot in the back or something,” Tate told CBS4.
Police said they have a suspect in custody — James Holmes — and that explosives were found at the suspect’s home. They said they aren’t sure if there was a second suspect and are continuing to investigate.
This is extremely depressing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected in this tragedy.
