BOOM!

Take that Washington Post!

No need to acknowledge 16 year old champion Gabrielle Douglas, she’s snapping up covers left and right just fine!

The American Olympic champion who was instrumental in helping the US reclaim gold in the women’s team gymnastics finals at the 2012 London Olympics landed atop TIME’s 2012 Olympics special issue.

Martin Schoeller, who shot the cover even before Gabby won her Olympic medal, travelled to Des Moines Iowa, where the 16-year-old has been training since 2012 with legendary Olympic coach Liang Chow.

Schoeller, snapped a few fabolous shots of the gymnastic in her host family’s home as well as at her training facility.

“It was inspiring to see Gabby with the family who has taken her in so that she can pursue her dream of being an Olympic athlete,” the photographer said. In one picture, Douglas is posed in a full split against her family’s refrigerator, a move that Schoeller says isn’t uncommon for the 16-year-old gymnast.

“She’s always stretching around the house to stay limber—you see what it means for these athletes to live and breathe their sport,” Schoeller says. “And then to watch the little girl clinging to Gabby’s leg and playing with her like a new sister was really lovely.
