COVID-19 is here. It’s real, very real. At a time like this, we should be focusing on prevention, treatment and limiting our movements, but we’re talking about cheap flights? An article entitled, “If I Die, I Die” that speaks to millennials taking advantage of cheap flights during this crisis has been making the rounds and sparking a lot of debate. I’m sorry, but am I missing something? How can you be so selfish at a time such as this? Have you people not heard of social distancing?
I usually limit my ranting to What’s App groups but I was asked by a few people to express my thoughts, so here I am. Do I care about cheap flights at a time like this? No, I don’t. As someone who travels extensively every year for work and leisure, travel is the last thing on my mind. Most millennials cite their youth and strong immune system as a reason to take the risk but my rebuttal to this is, well, what about everyone else?
Yes, you’re having an amazing time on your 97$ flight at your 50$ hotel, but what happens when you contract the disease and spread to those most vulnerable and at-risk? What happens to those people at your job, at your apartment complex, at your church, at your local supermarket? What then? What happens if your actions lead to the death of someone you love? Is that cheap ticket worth it then?
Am I judging you, yes, I am? Instead of lowering the conversation, we should be elevating it. What can we do to stop the spread of this deadly virus? What can we do to help those most at risk? How can we lobby for more action from our leaders?
A vacation can wait. I am worried about my safety as a healthy young woman and I am also worried about those who may not be strong enough to fight off this virus. I hope that you all are taking the necessary steps to protect your families and loved ones. I’m trying to stay alive, survive and thrive!
If you think that you may be exhibiting symptoms of COVID19, call your health provider, and take the actionable steps to not spread this virus. Stay away from children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Be safe out there! ✌?
