When was the last time you played tourist in your own city or in your own country? Many people would turn their noses down at the thought, and maybe a few years ago I would too, but traveling locally is an awesome experience. Yes, exotic locations like Paris, London, Greece and Dubai are all bucket-list worthy, but so is home. If you live in a destination that attracts a large number of visitors and you boldly use the phrase “I Live Where You Vacation”, then maybe it’s time for you to actually get out and be a domestic tourist
Still not sold on the idea? Let me try to convince you with these “4 Major Reasons Why You Should Be A Domestic Tourist”.
- Be A Local Guide: How embarrassing is it to have a friend come into town and you’re the host but don’t know a thing about your own city or country? I have had a friend who has been living in Washington D.C. for quite some time and I explored and experienced the capital before her. I live in The Bahamas and I have visited just about every island, but I have friends, even a sister, that have never visited the other 15 major islands. Exploring your backyard helps you to become knowledgeable about your country so when you have guests come to town you can be a local guide!
- Support Local Owned Businesses: When you get out of the house and play tourist for the day or the weekend you are supporting the community and spreading the wealth. Domestic tourists are just as important or, in some cases, even more important than international tourists. Instead of taking money out of the community or the country you are keeping it in and helping local businesses to thrive.
- Renewed Love Of Home: I live in paradise and I live where many people vacation, but guess what, I get sick and tired of it. Sometimes I hate it; sometimes I wish I lived in Paris or New York, but it’s home. Traveling or discovering new neighborhoods and islands gives me a sense of pride and renews my love for my home. Experiencing the sunrise in a different part of the country or counting the different shades of blue in the ocean reminds me that I am blessed to live in the most beautiful place from space.
- It’s Inexpensive: Traveling internationally can put a pretty big dent in your bank account as opposed to traveling domestically. Depending on where you live you can forgo major travel costs like tickets by going on a road trip, staying with friends or taking a boat to another island. When you travel locally you are able to avoid certain tourist traps which means you spend less money. Head to the best parks, best beaches, or free museums.
Don’t be afraid to be a domestic tourist! Relearn the history of your city or country. Visit restaurants that you haven’t visited in years, go on a tour or excursion that you haven’t been on since childhood. Get out and explore your city, vacation where you live!
