Believe it or not, in many countries, you don’t have to spend a single dollar to gain entry to some of the most popular tourist hot spots. If you’re on a budget, I suggest the first thing that you do while planning a trip is to search for ‘free things to do in (insert destination), you will be surprised.
I once got into the Louvre in Paris free of charge, and most New York City museums are free but you are expected to kindly ‘donate’ an amount of your choosing.
If you’re planning a trip to the capital of The Bahamas, or you’re a domestic traveller, I’ve got some goodies for you. Put on your walking shoes and explore lil Nassau by making a stop at these five locations.
- Rawson & Parliament Square – These two historical squares located in the heart of Downtown Bay St., is where you can find remnants of our colonial past; a statue of Queen Victoria, and our flamingo pink Parliament buildings and a bust of our first Bahamian Governor-General.
- John Watling’s Distillery – What’s better than free rum? Head on over to the Buena Vista Estate located Downtown Nassau and tour the John Watling’s Distillery where Bahamian rum and spirits are made. The free tour takes you through one of the most historic estates in Nassau and gives you a history of the estate and the infamous pirate John Watlings. Ask for free samples in the Red Turtle Tavern.
- Beach – There are more than enough beautiful beaches to go around, especially on the island of New Providence; unlike some beaches around the world, there is no entrance fee. Cruise passengers tend to flock to Junkanoo Beach located near downtown Nassau. My top picks, which are favourites of locals are Cabbage Beach located Paradise Island as well as Jaws Beach located on the western end of the island.
- Straw Market – The Straw Market is free to enter, but I’ll warn you, everything inside is for sale. It is a good place to stroll and look at local trinkets like straw bags, hats and wood carvings.
- Queen’s Staircase – Most commonly known to locals as the 66 steps, this historic stairwell named in honour of Queen Victoria is a must- visit. You will find a beautiful waterfall in addition to lots of foliage making this one magical spot.
Have you ever been to Nassau? What are some of your favourite spots?

My favorite beach is Saunders — accessible, great for kids, safe, and clean.
Other fun (free!) things we do in Nassau? Walk along the Baha Mar nature paths and watch the birds on the pond, visit The Caves near Blake Road, and collect sea biscuits, shells and beach glass at various little beaches along West Bay Street.
