September 21st makes exactly one year since I went on an amazing Italian tour. My best friend and I woke up one day and decided that we wanted to go to Italy, so we went to Italy! Both of us had different places we wanted to visit in mind and because we couldn’t decide on just one spot, we decided to visit them all.
Our journey began in Southern Italy, the birthplace of pizza, Napoli, because I was obsessed with visiting the quaint but luxurious island of Capri and the Almalfi Coast. We were able to take a bus from Naples to Sorrento and on to Positano. The views are worth the near-death experience of driving up the steep cliffs! I promise! From there we were able to branch off into different towns and visit historic sights like Pompeii, the Roman town that was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The town was destroyed but also preserved by the lava and ash which makes it an interesting site to visit. If you’re adventurous I highly recommend taking the jeep tour up to the crater of the volcano that destroyed the towns, which is approximately 4,203 ft up! The views; amazing, stunning, breathtaking. Do it for the gram!
From Naples, our adventures continued on to Roma! We decided that it made sense to take the trains from city to city in order to save money and to see more of the country. Rome is as beautiful as they say it is. Full of life and full of history. While it can be overwhelming, its Rome! Our itinerary did the absolute most as we wanted to take in as many sights as possible. The trick to Rome is to hire a tour guide! Don’t be cheap. I found a great company called Angel Tours that was the absolute best. Skip the super long lines to get in the Colisseum and Vatican Museum! One word of caution, the Vatican tour was about 3 hours and as amazing as it is, my brain didn’t have the capacity to continue to learn about Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The highlight of the tour though was entering the Sistine Chapel, one of the most historic places on earth. Sorry, no pictures allowed [that didn’t stop us though!] Beware, they really do scream at you..
