Oh my Andros!
I travelled to Andros for the second time leisurely in August when I celebrated my 30th birthday. While I spent an amazing and relaxing time on the luxurious Kamalame Cay, I was not able to get out and fully explore the biggest island in The Bahamas. However, recent work duties allowed me to travel to Fresh Creek, Andros [Central] for four days where I was able to explore the ecological wonder of The Bahamas. Andros is massive and it is virtually impossible to see and do everything on the island. But, there’s no harm in trying.
What is there to do on Andros? A lot! It just depends on your flavor. Birding, biking, swimming, fishing, exploring, cave diving and so much more. My so much more included facing my fears and jumping into a blue hole! To some this might not sound like a major deal, but I’m no Olympic swimmer, my fear of being sucked into a blue hole was quite rational. The blue hole of choice was the beautiful Captain Bill’s Blue Hole located at the National Park. The blue hole approximately 440 m in diameter upon first look took my breath away and unlike the world famed ‘Dean’s Blue Hole’ in Clarence Town, Long Island, this blue hole is inland, surrounded by pine trees and is simply a work of art.
I had every intention of swimming in that blue hole, but once I got on that wooden platform overlooking the fresh water body, I was intimidated and scared! My heart was no doubt beating out of my chest, but after some coercing, I grabbed my GoPro and jumped, free of fear! How was it?
Ahhhhhmazing! It lasted all of 2-3 secs but was exhilarating. The first thought that popped into my head was, “Is that what you were so afraid of?” It was a refreshing and unforgettable moment, so much so that I did it again!
That’s the thing with fear, it stops you from enjoying some of the best moments of life. Like they say, everything that you want is on the other side of fear, a valuable lesson I learned with just one jump into the blue!
If you’re ever in need of a vacation, or a quick getaway [because who doesn’t], I suggest you take a trip to the ‘Big Yard’, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Andros! You might find yourself doing something, you’ve never done before!
