How does Insecure follow up the best episode of the season? Just, like this! Season 3, epi 5, “Ready-Like”, was another amazingly written, true to life half hour of television. The show picked off right where they left, Issa and Lawrence’s supermarket meet up, with Issa asking Lawrence, “What have you been up to?”…Let’s just say Lawrence has been up to A LOT. We see Issa’s former beau smashing everything he could irresponsibly and contracting the claps! Yes, #LawrenceHive ya boy got CLAPS and has to now call up every thotty hotty and tell them to get tested.
If you’ve been asking yourselves what is Issa’s plan for life since she left her job, we got a glimpse of what her next big thing will be. Issa’s collecting forms and permits needed to throw a neighbourhood party, I’m still unsure of what it is she’s aiming to do, but…*shrugs*. Her new thang, Nathan, ever the supportive boo accompanies her for moral support and reassures her, she gat this….whatever “this” is. While we’re on the subject of Nathan, it seems as if he has fallen for Issa. The two are snuggled up in bed and he drops the, I have feelings for you on Issa, who was not expecting it, but reciprocates the sentiment. But, listen….listen…I told yall Nathan was trashy. So, remember that fight in Episode 1, well, Lyft now is investigating and calls Issa up for a statement and guess who goes missing? Ya boy NATHAN! Issa calls him, texts him to no avail. I don’t think Nathan will be around for much longer, Lawrence is back and truthfully, I’m over him. I don’t even know his purpose. Next!
Molly is getting on ma damn last nerves. She has too many expectations of what her life SHOULD be that she is missing out on what her life COULD be right now, not in her head. Case in point! Nathan’s cute Asian friend keeps her jacket safe for her after that wild Coachella night and meets up with her to return it. He casually, nah, he lets her know that he wants to take her out, of course, she finds every excuse not to go because she’s Molly and he’s Asian….which leads me to the conclusion. This is why she’s single. In the words of Issa, Molly is hella ignorant and close-minded, just because Nathan’s friend is Asian, she doesn’t want to date him, but she’s down for a married man….ok sis….
So, my favourite scenes of the episode. Tiffany’s baby shower. This is the first time the gang’s been in one location since the season began and I loved it. So many moving parts, so much love, laughter and drammmma! We see the changing dynamics of Tiffany, Issa, Molly and Kelli’s friendship immediately, well we saw it last week as well but this week, the friendship has cracked down the middle. You would’ve thought that Kelli and gang would have been the ones throwing the baby shower but NAH. There was an entire planning committee of people we ain’t nnneerrrvr seen before. And, they hella annoying. Issa and Tiffany get to the shower a bit early to help Tiffany set up but were not needed because everything was taken care of. So, they get put on “fix the chair duty”. While Issa and Molly are pretty much chill about the situation, Kelli, who is Tiffany’s best friend turns it all the way up.
After slaving in the kitchen to create the perfect cupcakes for the baby shower, the anonymous baby shower committee representative Blair tells her, ain’t no space for them. Can you say turn up? Kelli storms out, while Issa and Molly try to dissuade her. Kelli begins to spill her feelings about Tiffany having a baby and losing her best friend, which is the realest thing I’ve ever witnessed. Life happens and friends become strangers. I’ve never seen this side of Kelli, I love her. Tiffany, who also joins them outside chimes in to tell her friends, they’re pretty much trash and despite what they have going on in life, they could have thrown her a baby shower. But, then Kelli chimes in, to remind Tiffany that she offered to throw a baby shower…so much drama…I’ve been that trashy friend before, and I’ve also been a Tiffany before. Life changes and you just can’t be bothered at times.
But, while there was baby shower drama, we got so much more, like a real conversation, with Issa and Lawrence. The two were able to catch up on life and chat about Issa quitting her job and trying to start her own thing, which Lawrence told her he would help her with if she needed help. Lawrence tells Issa he’s doing great at work and his projects are very successful and Issa congratulates him on his success. It was a lighthearted conversation and while Issa told Molly she’s finally over Lawrence, nah, you a liar. I don’t believe you. It’s also evident that Lawrence isn’t over Issa even though he told his friends he’d never get back with her….but he also defended her honour when his boy called her a ho earlier in the episode.
I just realized this review is WAY too long and I left so much out, so you should definitely watch the episode. But, before I go, got one more thing to say…yawl Dro and Candace is having a baby and Molly is all the way in her feelings…*picks up phone to go out with Asian dude now!*
