Now, let’s dig in!
I wasn’t expecting Ghost-Like, Insecure’s Season 3 finale to address all of the nagging questions that plagued my soul neither did I believe it could have been done in thirty minutes, but I am pleasantly surprised that it was the perfect finale.
Our girl’s officially grown, she’s celebrating her 30th birthday with a surprise date night planned by her bestie, who also has to don a cape and save her from the disaster that is Nathan! We’ve been wondering and placing bets on where Nathan could’ve been, my bet was jail, but this neeega, was merely existing, and casually strolls back in Issa’s life like the last eff boy. On her birthday, of all days, Nathan shows up at her front door with flowers in tow but gets the read of life from Molly before Issa is able to see him. How you figure you ghost someone and show up on their birthday with some raggedy flowers? Boy bye!
Molly plans a girl’s night out to celebrate Issa’s birthday, a cemetery screening of one of her favourite movies. It’s is super chill, low-key, vibey night out, the complete opposite of Coachella, but it still pops with that Kellie effect, she’s a gem, who should be protected at all costs. Lawrence, of course, finds his way to the same screening, and he and Issa share a few moments, and I’m sure I saw some fireworks go off. Did you see em? Look, they’re right THERE! Man, I just love Lawrence and I love Issa, and I’m sure they will find their way back to each other, just not as soon as we’d like. One thing we can all agree on though, Lawrence has grown, he finally remembers Issa’s birthday.
Speaking of Lawrence, there was a memorable scene in the finale, where we are introduced to Lawrence’s father. We’ll refer to him as Daddy Lawrence from now on. The two catch up at a diner, and the two chat about Lawrence’s love life and Issa. Lawrence belabours on the challenges of dating and love and his dad pretty much tells him that young people simply don’t wanna do the work involved to make relationships work. I think pop’s low key is rooting for Iss…It’s clear that Lawrence respects his father and his advice because as we see, Lawrence takes a step forward and is dating again, albeit not with Issa. Too bad the woman he chooses to date is now an associate of Issa’s. Messy.
OH Issa. At the beginning of the episode, we see Issa out there pushing her Block Party, she pretty much gets a no at every turn and decides to shelf the idea and start to look for a 9-5. Her excuse for thinking she would be able to pull the event off was Nathan, at least this is what she tells Molly. I was a bit disturbed with her way of thinking, thankfully she redeemed herself at the end of the episode and is motivated to keep pushing. I’m also disappointed that Molly, as her best friend didn’t do more to encourage her to keep pushing. Her negativity this season was almost unbearable, but I’m glad Issa got her all the way together. Remember when I told you Nathan showed up at Issa’s doorstep on her birthday but was thwarted by Molly. Well, Molly lets it slip that Nathan showed up and Issa was PISSED! Rightfully so, while Molly’s intentions were good, I do think Molly should’ve said something.
Issa unloaded on Molly and called out her negativity and the way she’s been moving at work. I loved the scene because Issa was brutally honest with her friend and she needed it, she brought boujie Molly back to earth. Molly, I love you, but girl, you been tripping. Sometimes you need that friend who is going to ensure that you remember who you are. I’m also happy that we get to see things patched up between Asian bae and Mollz. After her conversation with Issa, Molly calls him up and apologizes and confesses to being in a bad space since her last relationship. I’m here for it, bae seems like he’s not the type to allow Molly run over him and she needs a man that going’s to be a man!
(Actual footage of me as Nathan popped up on the screen last night!)
Now, the elephant in the room. Nathan. Honestly. I have no words. At the end of the episode, Issa and Nathan finally get to have that come to Jesus moment. Where was Nathan? According to him, he was in Houston, “dealing with a lot of ish”, and he couldn’t talk to anyone. Listen, I’m confused with this explanation and I’m pissed for Issa, but she handled the situation perfectly. She basically told him she didn’t ask to be pursed and she needed time to figure out what she wanted. Bravo boo! I think we needed more from this scene. I’m not sure what more I was expecting, but something. I feel incomplete. I love the grown woman Issa has settled into this season and I will always root for her.
So, what now? Let’s speculate on next season. I do think Issa and Nathan will get together, Issa’s weak. Lawrence and movie girl will also get together but this will complicate things for Issa’s block party. There’s definitely still sparks between Issa and Lawrence that can’t be ignored, I just think Lawrence is waiting for Issa to get her life together, get a job, some security and stability. Lastly, Molly and Asian bae will be the cutest Season 4 ‘it’ couple!
