I’m a sucker for new hair care products, so naturally when our favourite girlfriend Tracee Ellis Ross announced that she was releasing Pattern Beauty, a hair care line for curly, coily and tight texured curls, I was over the moon!
I have loved the legend that is Diana Ross, Tracee’s mother for….all my life! 🙂 As a natural, through and through, there were not many women of color rocking their natural hair in the entertainment industry when I was a child. Diana Ross was a light, an unapologetic natural hair care warrior. Tracee followed suit and carried the torch of loving her natural curls. These were my icons, therefore I was esctatic to support Tracee in her new endeavour.
When the line dropped September 9th, I bought every single product offered. I purchased a deluxe bundle that came with a hydrating shampoo, heavy conditioner, leave-in conditioner, jojoba oil, a hair clip, a shower brush and a microfiber towel all for a whooping $124 PLUS shipping and international tax into The Bahamas. These products are not your usual drug store products, and therefore do cost a pretty penny!
So, how do these products measure up?! Let’s get into the good stuff.
The Pattern Beauty Hydrating Shampoo left my hair clean but without feeling stripped. It lathers really well if you’re someone who needs some sudge bubbles in your life. The smell is light and pleasant, it boasts of notes of Jasmine, Bergamot and Sweet Sandalwood. The 9.8 oz shampoo retails on its own for $20.00.
The Pattern Beauty Heavy Conditioner is defintely my issssssh! The line offers three types of conditioners to suit your hair type. My bundle came with the heavy conditioner, made with Avocado Oil, Shea Butter & Safflower Oil. I loved the slip provided which made detangling my hair a breeze. The conditioner is thicker than a snicker, but don’t be alarmed, it melts like butter into your tresses. I can see this becoming a staple in my wash day routine. My hair looked and felt like it didn’t need any additional product…shocking! Pattern Beauty offers SUPER large conditioners because we all know curly girls don’t use “dime sized” anything. The 13 oz conditioners retail for $25 and there is also larger 29 oz bottles available.
LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER + JOJOBA OIL
Pattern Beauty does not yet provide styling products yet, so I “styled” with a cocktail of Leave-In Conditioner + Jojoba Oil. I did not have high hopes for a bomb wash and go, I’m being honest. But, I was pleasantly suprised at the amount of defintion and shine that these two products left me with. The smell of both of these products together is nothing short of heavenly, especially the jojoba oil that features lavender oil. The smell is not potent at all, but heavenly. The Leave-In Conditioner is not thick, but more a medium consistency, so it soaks right into the hair, leaving no residue. Just soft, defined coils. I loved this duo.
While wash day was amazing, the real test stands in Day 2 & 3, and how the products will hold up over the course of my week. I may end up adding a light gel to my mix depending on how well it lasts.
The Pattern Beauty shower brush is complicated, as it stands, I have a love and hate for it. It is hard, and if you’re not careful, you can rip your hair right out! It’s a bit heavy for my hand, which I don’t like, and takes some time getting use to. When using a brush, I love for it to flow effortlessly through my hair. This brush takes some time to get adjusted to, but when you do the definition and clumping are amazing! I just didn’t have the patience to deal with it. The brush retails for $17!
Love, love, love! I love me a good microfiber towel and this one instantly become my favourite microfiber towel. It’s HUGEEEEE, which is something that was lacking in my current selection of microfiber towels, and it is super absorbent. If you do not own a microfiber towel and you’re a natural girl, please, I beg you, do yourself a favour and get one! This one retails for $19.
This sturdy little clip is going in the rotation. Truthfully, I wouldn’t recommend a $10 clip to anyone, it’s just not necessary. But, because it came in my bundle I WILL use it. It’s not flimsy at all, so maybe in time, I might change my mind on if you need this in your life.
And that my friends is my Pattern Beauty review by Tracee Ellis Ross! I loved wash day. My hair feels fresh, light and happy. My hair is defined and looks juicy and joyful! If I had to not love something about this line, it would be that there are no styling products at the moment. I live in a humid climate and I need as much products as I can get my hands on. I’m not sure how long my wash day will last with only a leave-in conditioner and an oil. I just don’t, but I’m hopeful. I do think that there will be more releases and I’m super excited to see what’s next!
